Land Cruiser 300 Series – The Stats

Land Cruiser 300 Series – The Stats

Introducing the new 300 Series...

The long awaited Land Cruiser 300 Series has finally hit SA shores, with the baseline model starting from just under R1,300,000 going up to R1,850,000. Emotions are mixed at the moment, with what seems to be a 50/50 split in the Land Cruiser community between V8 loyalty, and the performance boundaries that the new V6 is pushing.

In terms of design, the 300 has undergone quite a dramatic facelift from the 200, and there is certainly a new age sport look that has been achieved by Toyota. However, according to Toyota the new look of the 300 Series brings the perfect combo of dynamic presence with a sense of agility. Despite this new age look, one could almost be forgiven for confusing it with the almighty 80 Series from years back. Albeit, it should have been a very fleeting glance, and quickly corrected by the angular lines of the new model.

5 Different Models for the 300 Series

There are 5 models within the Land Cruiser 300 Series range:

  • Land Cruiser 300 GX-R 3.3D
  • Land Cruiser 300 ZX 3.3D
  • Land Cruiser 300 ZX 3.5T

These three models remain Toyota’s utility-based vehicles, while the ZX replaces the VX-R as the luxury model. However, they retain key features such as LED headlamps with integrated DRLs, keyless entry with auto-door-lock, park distance control, an electric parking brake, climate control with rear-zone, power driver-seat adjustment, a multi-Information Display, built-in navigation (with Tracks 4 Africa support on the GX-R), multiple power outlets with charging port, Crawl Control and Drive Mode Select.

  • Land Cruiser 300 GR-S 3.3D
  • Land Cruiser 300 GR-S 3.5T

The sportier looking GR-S model is new to the SA market, and is available with a 3.3D and 3.5T powertrain. Together with the ZX, this model consists of power fold-down third-row seating, a power-operated back door with hands-free function, heated steering wheel with wood accents, JBL 14-speaker audio system with DVD playback and 12.3-inch screen, Multi-Terrain Monitor with Panoramic View, seat heating & ventilation for first- and second-row passengers, a wireless charger and tyre pressure monitoring. All models have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

Land Cruiser 300 Series Engine

Perhaps the biggest change and most controversial change-up to the new 300 Series from its 200 predecessor, is it’s new engine line-up.

This line-up sports a twin-turbo petrol 3.5 litre V6 or a turbo diesel 3.3-litre V6. The petrol offers 305 kW and 650 N.m of torque, while the new diesel delivers 225 kW at 700 N.m. Top speed is limited at 210 km/h for both options. The new 300 engines have also been equipped with a new 10-speed automatic transmission including low-range functionality.

V8 Traditionalism aside, the performance stats of the V6 are impressive, and Toyota have once again managed to live up to their reputation of close to perfect engineering.

Other features

Crawl control and Drive Mode Select ensure the Land Cruiser 300 retains its well-known off road prowess.

Fuel consumption is said to be 12.1l/100km for the Petrol and 8.9l/100km for the diesel, however this is also somewhat dependent on the weight of the driver’s right foot.
