What changed by year

  • 2007 to about 2012: the 4.2 diesel. Almost every 76 for sale from these years has the 4.2 six-cylinder diesel with no turbo. Slow on the highway, but simple, tough and the cheapest way into a 76.
  • About 2013 to 2024: the 4.5 V8. The turbo diesel V8 is what most 76s from these years have. Strong pull and a 3,500 kg towing rating. New ones are no longer made, so every V8 now is a used car.
  • February 2024: the 2.8 GD-6 and a new face. A four-cylinder turbo diesel with less fuel use and, for the first time, an automatic gearbox. The V8 was gone from the 76 by December 2024, so a new 76 is a 2.8 only.
  • Today: 29 of the 195 listed are new cars from dealers, all 2.8s.

What to check before you buy

  • Rust and water in the back. Lift the rear cargo mat. Water getting in is common on older wagons.
  • Rear springs. Look for cracked leaves and loose U-bolts, especially on cars that have carried a full kit.
  • Weight. The legal limit is 3,060 kg, and a 2.8 carries only about 575 to 795 kg with people on board. Drawers, a fridge and a second battery add up fast.
  • Front axle and clutch. On older cars, listen for clicking on full lock. On cars that towed, check how the clutch bites.
  • Old front or new front. Bull bars, lights and snorkels for pre-2024 cars do not fit the 2024 facelift.
  • Compare like with like. A 4.2, a V8 and a 2.8 are different cars on price. Use the table above for the right one.

Land Cruiser 76 questions

How much is a Land Cruiser 76 Series in South Africa?

The typical asking price for a Land Cruiser 76 Series is R989 919, across 193 priced cars on 1 November 2026, from R329 900 to R2 549 950. The engine moves the price most: a 2.8 GD-6 about R1 099 950, a 4.5 V8 about R801 900, a 4.2 diesel about R474 450. These are asking prices, not what the cars finally sell for, so expect some room to negotiate.

How many Land Cruiser 76 Series are for sale in South Africa?

195 on 1 November 2026, from dealers and private sellers across the country, of which 29 are new. This page lists every one of them and updates daily.

Can you still buy a new Land Cruiser 76 V8?

No. The 2.8 GD-6 four-cylinder arrived in the 76 in February 2024 and the V8 was gone from the 76 by December 2024, so a new 76 is a 2.8 only. A V8 76 is now a used car: 67 are listed, typical asking R801 900.

Which 76 Series engine should I buy?

The 4.5 V8 turbo diesel has the most pull and the deepest following, and it tows 3,500 kg. The 2.8 GD-6 is the newest, uses less fuel and is the only 76 you can get with an automatic gearbox. The older 4.2 diesel has no turbo: it is slow, but simple and very tough, and it is the cheapest way into a 76.

What is the difference between the Land Cruiser 76 and 79?

Body style. The 76 is the five-door station wagon, the 79 is the bakkie (single or double cab). They share the same chassis and engines. The 76 carries less: about 575 to 795 kg of payload on a 2.8, against about 810 to 1,050 kg for a 2.8 79 double cab, people included.

What should I check when buying a used 76 Series?

Look under the rear cargo mat for rust and water, check the rear leaf springs for cracks and the U-bolts for play, and on older cars listen for clicking from the front axle on full lock. Weigh what is already fitted: a kitted 76 reaches its 3,060 kg legal limit quickly. If you plan to fit bars or lights, note that parts for the old front do not fit the 2024 facelift.
