A new Toyota Prado costs R1,369,200 for the TX, R1,530,400 for the VX-R and R1,543,700 for the VX-L. Those are Toyota South Africa’s prices on 19 October 2026.

Used, a 2021 to 2023 Prado 150 with the 2.8 diesel asks about R879,900 (153 listings).

That’s Fortuner money plus a lot. So the real question is what the extra buys you, and whether an old shape will do the job. On 19 October 2026 we had more than 800 Prado listings live, from old Prado 90s to brand-new 250s.

Every new Prado here has the same engine. It is the 2.8 GD-6, a 2.8-litre turbodiesel making 150 kW. GD-6 is Toyota’s current diesel engine family, the same one you get in the Hilux and Fortuner. All three have an eight-speed automatic and seven seats. Toyota says the Prado tows up to 3,500 kg braked.

Every new one gets a 3-year/100,000 km warranty. It also gets a 9-service/90,000 km service plan.

There is no petrol and no hybrid. Some Hiluxes and Fortuners now come as a 48-volt mild hybrid, so people ask. Toyota South Africa has not announced a hybrid Prado (19 October 2026).

The TX to VX-R jump is R161,200. The VX-R to VX-L jump is only R13,300. So choose on how you drive, not on price. Toyota pitches the VX-R for gravel and the VX-L for tar.

The TX is where a Prado makes the clearest money sense. At the top end, think twice. A VX-L costs only R53,100 less than the cheapest Land Cruiser 300 (R1,596,800, Toyota South Africa, 19 October 2026).

The last new Prado 150 TX cost R1,168,400 in April 2024. A new 250 TX costs R200,800 more.

Dealers are asking less than Toyota’s price

New Prados are not scarce any more. Plenty sit on dealer floors with under 100 km.

A typical new TX asks about R40,000 under Toyota’s price. The cheapest ask R1,278,900, about R90,000 under (3 listings). The VX-L shows no real discount yet.

Ask what comes with a cheap price. Dealer finance, a trade-in or a demo registration can be tied to it. Get a drive-away price in writing.

In 2024 it was the other way round. Near-new Prados were advertised R70,000 to R290,000 over list while the waiting lists were long. That has passed.

A used 250 asks about R1,350,000 (161 listings, about 23,500 km). A 2025 VX-R asks about R100,000 less than a new one on a dealer floor. A 2024 VX-R asks about R200,000 less.

The 2024 First Edition asks about R1,350,450. That is a small group of 8 listings.

A June 2024 car is still under Toyota’s 3-year warranty until about June 2027, as long as it is under 100,000 km. Ask whether the service plan carries over before you count on it.

Check the recall. Toyota is recalling 2,279 current Prados made between December 2023 and August 2025. Software in the dials can hide the oil pressure and temperature warnings. If you buy a 2024 or 2025 Prado, ask the dealer to show the recall was done. It’s free.

Used Prado 150 prices by year (2009 to 2023)

The 150 is the Prado most people are shopping for. There are 455 for sale, and the typical one asks about R649,900.

Notice the big step between 2013 and 2014 cars. After that, prices climb with almost every year.

The engine matters more than the year

Up to 2020, a diesel Prado 150 has the 3.0 D-4D. That is Toyota’s older 3.0 turbodiesel, with 120 kW and a five-speed auto. The petrol is the 4.0 V6.

In late 2020 the 2.8 GD-6 replaced the 3.0 diesel. It makes 150 kW and 500 Nm, with a six-speed auto. That is the same power as a new 250.

So 2020 is a split year. A 2020 2.8 asks about R789,950 (9 listings). A 2020 3.0 asks about R739,948 (16 listings). Check the engine, not the year. A 2.8 on a 150 means late 2020 or newer.

On the 150, the top trims are the VX and VX-L. There is no VX-R.

Before you buy, ask for service records. On a 3.0 diesel, ask when the injectors and fuel filter were last done. On a 2.8, ask for a scan for fault codes.

A new 250 TX asks about R450,000 more than a typical late 2.8 Prado 150. That is a lot of diesel and a few Bots trips.

The case for the old shape is strong. It has the same 2.8 engine and power, plus a long-range second tank. It is a proven shape with a huge local aftermarket. On the forums, some owners would rather have a late 150 VX-L than a new TX.

The 250 hits back with eight gears against six. It tows 3,500 kg braked against 3,000 kg for the 2.8 150. Even the TX gets adaptive cruise and blind-spot warning, and you get the full warranty from day one. One owner who moved from a 150 found the 250 used less diesel towing a camper to Kruger. He also found it rides harder on gravel.

And the looks split people. One forum owner thought the side view looked too much like an old SsangYong Musso.

We compare the two in detail in Prado 150 vs 250.

Diesel or V6 petrol: what moves a used Prado’s price

At the same age, diesel and petrol ask about the same money. But diesels rule the 150 supply, with 376 diesels for sale against 76 petrols. After 2017 the V6 almost disappears.

The forums argue this one hard. The petrol camp says the V6 is the safe used buy, with less to break. The diesel camp says it uses less fuel, which counts on a long trip to Bots or Namibia. Owners say the V6 does about 6.5 km/l in town or towing. On the open road they see about 9 km/l.

What moves the price: the engine, the year, the km and the trim. The 2.8 step is clear. A 2019 Prado 150, before the 2.8, asks about R689,900 (25 listings). A 2021, with the 2.8 or the V6, asks about R809,900 (45 listings).

These are asking prices. Cars usually sell for less. More than half of the Prado 150s for sale (243 of 455) have dropped their price at least once since April, usually by about 5%. Dealer Prado stock turns over in about three to five weeks.

Most 120s on sale are automatics: 11 of the 56 are manuals. The typical one has done about 295,000 km, so the service book matters more than the year. See Prado 120 details and Prado 120 market data.

The Prado 90 is rare now. Only a handful are for sale at any time (9 on 19 October 2026). They ask roughly R70,000 to R250,000, depending on condition and km.

Before you sign: trackers, insurance and finance

Trackers. The Prado is regularly on hijack target lists. Some insurers want two trackers on any Prado from 2018 on. A claim has been turned down because the second tracker was missing. Ask your insurer before you sign, not after. Our theft and hijacking guide covers the protection layers.

Finance. Toyota’s site shows a monthly “from” price. That figure assumes a deposit or a big final payment, called a balloon. Ask what you will owe at the end.

What else to look at

  • Toyota Fortuner: R692,800 to R1,019,100 new (Toyota South Africa, 19 October 2026). The same family of 2.8 diesel. Even the top one is R350,100 cheaper than a Prado TX. See our Fortuner price guide.
  • Ford Everest and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport: both still on sale here.

These three sit a full price class below a new Prado. So most people really weigh them against a used Prado.
