A new Toyota Fortuner costs R692,800 to R1,019,100. That is Toyota South Africa’s list price on 19 October 2026, from the 2.4 manual to the 2.8 GR-Sport 4x4. Toyota South Africa has not announced a price or a date for the next-generation Fortuner.
Used, a 2016-on Fortuner with over 5,000 km asks about R529,900. That is across 1,886 listings, and the typical one has done about 84,000 km. A first-generation Fortuner (2006 to early 2016) asks about R259,000 (595 listings).

GD-6 is Toyota’s current diesel engine family. The 2.4 makes 110 kW. The 2.8 makes 150 kW, and the GR-Sport 165 kW. Toyota calls the 4x2 the “raised body”. Only the 2.4 4x2 comes as a manual. Every 2.8 is an automatic.
The trims are simple: plain, VX and GR-Sport. There is no Legend Fortuner. Legend is a Hilux name.
- 48V is Toyota’s mild hybrid: a small electric motor and battery that help the diesel. It adds R8,500 on a 4x2 and R11,100 on a 4x4.
- VX adds Toyota Safety Sense, which brakes before a crash, warns you when you drift out of your lane and keeps your distance on cruise. It also gets a blind spot monitor and a 360-degree camera. That costs about R45,000 more than the plain 2.8.
- GR-Sport gets the most power, upgraded shocks and the GR look.
Every Fortuner has seven seats, a 3-year or 100,000 km warranty and a 9-service, 90,000 km service plan.
For context, a 2.8 4x4 auto cost R589,400 at the 2016 launch. At the November 2020 facelift it cost R770,400. Today it is R926,000.
Is a new Fortuner coming?
Toyota South Africa has not announced a new-generation Fortuner, a launch date or a price (19 October 2026). The current shape has been on sale here since 2016. The new Hilux is already in showrooms, so the question at every braai is whether to wait.
The motoring press expects the next Fortuner to be shown soon and sold here in 2027. Toyota South Africa has not confirmed either.
Here is what that means for your money. A new Fortuner on the floor today is the outgoing shape, so negotiate like it is run-out stock. Don’t expect the next one to be cheaper: every Fortuner list price since 2016 has gone up. And once the new shape lands, expect used prices of this one to soften.
New or nearly new?
This is the surprise. New Fortuners on dealer floors ask about R50,000 to R115,000 less than Toyota’s list price. Here they are next to one-year-old cars.

Now the catch. Some of those low prices only hold if you take the dealer’s finance. Extras such as smash-and-grab film, paint protection and a delivery fee often go on top. So ask for the drive-away price. Then ask if it holds for cash or your own bank.
A one-year-old 2.4 asks about R100,000 less than a new one on the floor. On a 2.8 the gap is about R70,000 to R140,000. The 2025 GR-Sport figure looks like one dealer’s batch, so treat it as rough.
A 2024 to 2026 Fortuner may still have warranty and service plan left. Both usually run from the date the car was first registered, not the day you buy it. Check the service book and ask the dealer what is left.

This is the current shape. Most are 2.4 and 2.8 GD-6 diesels, with a few 4.0 V6 petrols from the early years.

Most newer years add about R20,000 to R40,000.
The date that matters is November 2020. Fortuners built from then have the 150 kW 2.8. Earlier 2.8s make 130 kW. Most 2020-registered cars have the older engine. So check the build date or the engine output on the papers, not just the year.
The same facelift brought Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also raised braked towing on the 4x4s to 3,300 kg. Before that, a 2.4 4x4 was rated for 2,500 kg and a 2.8 4x4 for 3,000 kg. If you tow a big caravan, that matters.
The value pick is a 2021. It asks about R499,000 (208 listings). That is about R255,000 less than a typical new one on a dealer floor (R754,000, 272 listings).

D-4D was Toyota’s diesel name before GD-6. By engine, a 2012 to 2016 3.0 D-4D asks about R297,248 (254 listings). A 2012 to 2016 2.5 D-4D asks about R269,900 (94 listings), and a 4.0 V6 petrol about R199,900 (42 listings). Live numbers are on Fortuner D-4D market data.
On cars this old, condition and km matter more than the year. A 2007 and a 2008 ask about the same.
On a 2012 to 2016 3.0 D-4D, the 4x4 and the raised body ask about the same. The 4x4 asks about R299,880 (85 listings), the 4x2 about R294,995 (169 listings). The 2.5 D-4D was 4x2 only. If you want low range, buy the 3.0 or the V6. Automatics ask about R35,000 more than manuals.
Three checks before you buy one:
- Takata airbags. Toyota South Africa’s free recall covers 2005 to 2015 Fortuners. In October 2025, more than a third of affected Toyotas still had not been fixed. Check the VIN at toyota.co.za/takatarecall or call 0800 139 111.
- Injectors. Early 3.0 D-4Ds can suffer injector trouble: white smoke, or a rattle when cold. Ask for proof of injector work. Owners in small towns often fit a second fuel filter to catch water in the diesel.
- Timing belt. The 3.0 and 2.5 D-4D need a new one every 150,000 km. Ask for proof.
4x4 or 4x2, 2.4 or 2.8?
New, the 4x4 costs R34,000 more on a 2.4 auto. On a 2.8 auto it costs R83,000 more.
Used, compare the same engine and age. Then a 4x4 asks about R40,000 to R65,000 more than a 4x2 (2019 to 2024 models).

The gap grows on newer cars because the 2.8 is where VX, 48V and GR-Sport live.
Towing is the real question. A 4x4 Fortuner built from late 2020 is rated to tow 3,300 kg braked. A 4x2 is rated for 2,500 kg. That 800 kg is often the difference between your caravan and a smaller one.
On 4x4 forums, some owners call the 2.4 sluggish with a heavy off-road caravan behind it. Others tow happily with one through sand. CAR magazine found the 2.4 pulls fine low down but runs short of breath when overtaking at speed. Some owners also report a shudder pulling away with a heavy trailer. If you tow, test-tow before you buy.
What moves a Fortuner’s price
Kilometres first. Here is what km do to a 2019 to 2021 Fortuner.

After km, the price moves with the build date (late 2020 or newer), 4x4, the VX or GR-Sport trim, the service plan balance and a full service history.
You will see some Fortuners asking R1.7 million to R2.3 million. Most of them (15 listings) are armoured conversions, not a secret top model.
Fortuner or Prado?
The cheapest new Prado, the 2.8 TX, costs R1,369,200 (Toyota South Africa, 19 October 2026). That is R350,100 more than the dearest Fortuner.
Used, the gap is smaller. A 2021 to 2023 Prado 150 2.8 GD-6 asks about R879,900 (153 listings). A Fortuner VX from the same years asks about R579,950 (129 listings).
They are not the same thing. The Fortuner is a seven-seat SUV built on the Hilux’s ladder frame. The Prado is a Land Cruiser. “A used Prado for new Fortuner money” is the classic South African argument, with the Ford Everest as the other cross-shop. South Africans bought 9,049 new Fortuners in 2025. That made it the best-selling ladder-frame SUV in the country.
The costs around the price
Hijacking and insurance. One insurer ranks the Fortuner fourth on its list of most hijacked vehicles. Many insurers want a tracker, and some want two. Ask your insurer what it needs before you sign. Our guide to immobilisers and trackers explains the options.
Finance and the balloon. A balloon is a lump sum left for the end of a finance deal. It lowers the monthly payment. At WesBank, 35% of new-car finance deals in August 2025 had one. The average balloon was 37% of the price. You pay interest on that lump sum for the whole term, so you pay more overall.
Add-ons. Smash-and-grab film, paint protection and delivery fees are extras. You can say no, or negotiate them.
Asking price is not selling price
Every used number in this guide is an asking price. Final selling prices are not public, and they are usually lower. We don’t have Fortuner selling prices, so we won’t guess.
What we can see is sellers giving ground. More than four in ten 2016-on Fortuners for sale have dropped their price since June, usually by about 4%. Of the Fortuners taken off sale lately, half went within about four weeks.
