The shape mirrors the Hilux it’s built on: a flat, forgiving depreciation curve — a first-year 2016 GD-6 still asks nearly half the new-car money a decade later — with a visible premium step at 2025–2026 where GR-Sport supply enters the mix.

| 2013 | R279,900 |
| 2011 | R244,450 |

Over 550 first-generation Fortuners are still live on the market — a testament to how these things refuse to die. A clean 3.0 D-4D 4x4 with history remains one of the cheapest ways into genuine seven-seat overlanding capability in the country.
The 4x4 premium: about R100,000
Drivetrain is the Fortuner’s big price lever. Across live GD-6 listings:
- 4x4 derivatives: median asking R619,000 (800+ listings)
- 4x2 and the rest of the range: median asking R519,950
That ~19% premium buys the low-range transfer case that turns the Fortuner from a tall family car into a genuine bush vehicle — and because the 4x4s resell harder, a chunk of the premium comes back at trade-in time. If the vehicle will never leave tar, the 4x2 auto is the honest value pick.
What else moves a Fortuner’s price
- The 2020 power bump — 2.8 GD-6 cars from the 2020 update run 150kW/500Nm; the market prices the stronger engine in.
- Seven-seat family duty — interior condition matters more than on a bakkie; hard-used school-run cars discount visibly.
- VX and GR-Sport spec — the top trims carry real premiums, especially in the 2024+ model years.
- Mileage bands — under 100,000 km is the comfortable zone; the 200,000 km+ cars price on service history.
