The new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ costs R714,000 for the GX and R761,400 for the VX. Those are Toyota South Africa’s prices, unchanged since it went on sale in May 2026 (checked 19 October 2026).

If you searched for the “FJ Cruiser 2026”, this is the car. The old FJ Cruiser is gone. The FJ is a new, smaller Land Cruiser.

Here is the part the brochure won’t tell you. Dealers are already asking less. A brand-new GX asks about R649,990 on live listings (75 listings, 0 km). So don’t pay list.

Below: what you get for the money, what the old FJ Cruiser costs now, and what else R700,000 buys.

What does a new Land Cruiser FJ cost?

There are two versions. Both are 2.7 petrol automatics with 4x4.

VersionToyota SA priceWhat you get
Land Cruiser FJ 2.7 4x4 GX (6-speed auto)R714,00017 inch wheels, fabric seats, low range, rear diff lock, 7 airbags, 8 inch screen
Land Cruiser FJ 2.7 4x4 VX (6-speed auto)R761,400Adds 18 inch wheels, synthetic leather, auto-levelling LED lights, Toyota Safety Sense, blind spot monitor, 360 degree camera

Toyota South Africa list prices, checked 19 October 2026.

The VX costs R47,400 more. Toyota Safety Sense is the driver aid pack: auto braking, adaptive cruise and a lane departure alert. Owners on the forums say stretch to the VX if you do long trips on the N2 or N1. The adaptive cruise and blind spot warning earn their keep on a long day behind the wheel.

Under the skin the two are the same. Same engine, same gearbox, same 4x4 system.

Every FJ gets a 3 year or 100,000 km warranty. The service plan covers 9 services or 90,000 km. It needs a service every 10,000 km.

List price is not what you pay to drive away. Most dealers add delivery and admin fees. Ask for an on-the-road figure in writing.

The same goes for the monthly figure in an advert. Most of those assume a deposit, a balloon payment, or both. A balloon is a big lump sum you still owe at the end of the deal. Ask what you’ll owe in year five before you sign.

What are dealers asking for a new FJ?

This is the most useful number in this guide. More than 200 new FJs are advertised for sale right now. Most of them ask less than Toyota’s price.

New Land Cruiser FJToyota SA listTypical asking on live listingsListings
GX, brand new (0 to 100 km)R714,000R649,99075
VX, brand new (0 to 100 km)R761,400R692,93254
Any version, 5,000 km or moren/aR679,80020

Live listings, pulled 19 October 2026.

That is about R64,000 under list for a new GX. A new VX asks about R68,000 under list.

The FJ is selling. In June 2026, 264 new FJs were registered. That nearly matched the Prado and beat the Land Cruiser 300. Even so, dealers have plenty of stock to move.

Take the advertised price to your dealer and ask for the same. Then ask what comes with it. A low price can depend on dealer finance, a trade-in, or a demo car registered to the dealer first. If a price sits above list, ask for an itemised quote. It is usually an accessory kit.

The flip side matters too. Pay R714,000 for a GX today and you start behind. Brand-new ones are already advertised for less.

FJs with a few thousand km ask about R679,800 (20 listings). That is no real saving yet over a new one. Only 20 cars, though, so treat it as a rough guide.

What do you get for the money?

FrameLadder frame, a shorter version of the Hilux and Fortuner base

Ground clearance245 mm

Fuel tank63 litres

A quick word on the jargon. Low range is a set of extra-low gears for steep, slow ground. A diff lock makes both rear wheels turn together, so one spinning wheel can’t strand you. A ladder frame is a separate steel chassis, like a bakkie has.

That is the good news. This is real 4x4 kit, and both versions get it. Owners report it climbs well off-road. Some say it feels less top-heavy than a Fortuner. The tight 5.5 m turning radius helps on narrow tracks and in mall parking.

Now the catch. It is the engine. South African road testers found it slow on overtakes and up long climbs. It is worse at Gauteng altitude, where a non-turbo petrol loses breath. One test timed 0 to 100 km/h in 15.3 seconds up there. The local verdict is simple: lovely truck, shame about the engine.

It also drinks. Toyota claims 10.7 litres per 100 km. Local road tests saw about 13.5. That gives you under 500 km from a tank, so plan your fuel stops on the long empty stretches.

There is no diesel. Toyota South Africa has not announced one (19 October 2026). Don’t buy, or wait, on a promise.

A few smaller things. The GX gets none of the driver aids. The standard screen is 8 inches, and the bigger one is a dealer extra.

There is also no parcel shelf to hide what’s in the boot. At a Joburg robot, bags on show are an invitation. Keep bags out of sight, and budget for smash-and-grab film.

FJ, FJ Cruiser or FJ40: which one do you mean?

In South Africa, “FJ” can mean three different Toyotas. Toyota does not call the new FJ a replacement for the FJ Cruiser.

Both the new and old FJ are listed on our FJ for sale page. For the classic FJ40 and FJ45, our classic Land Cruiser price guide has the detail.

Here is what the old FJ Cruiser asks now, by year:

2012R399,99541about 200,000
2013 to 2016R399,97222about 165,000
2017 to 2019R649,00011about 125,000
2020 to 2023R739,90032about 88,000

Live listings, pulled 19 October 2026. All years: about R429,900 (129 listings, about 161,000 km).

Look at the bottom row. A late old FJ Cruiser asks about R739,900 (32 listings). A brand-new FJ GX asks about R649,990 (75 listings). The old V6 holds its money hard.

There is a reason for that. The old one has a 4.0 V6 with 200 kW and 380 Nm. The new FJ makes 122 kW. The old one’s last new price, in 2023, was R813,000.

It has its faults. It is thirsty, with owners reporting roughly 11 to 15 litres per 100 km. The rear view is poor and the back seat is tight. It only tows 1,500 kg braked. And most for sale have done big km.

Where does the FJ sit in Toyota’s range?

Prado 2.8 GD-6 TXR1,369,200

Toyota South Africa list prices, checked 19 October 2026. GD-6 is Toyota’s current diesel engine family.

The FJ GX is the cheapest new Land Cruiser in the country. The next one, the 79 single cab 4.0 petrol, costs R135,300 more.

It also undercuts the cheapest 4x4 automatic Fortuner by R40,000. But that Fortuner is a diesel. The FJ VX costs R7,400 more than it.

A new Prado costs almost twice as much as an FJ GX.

Buy the FJ, or something else?

The FJ is already on the floor, so there is nothing to wait for. The real question is whether it beats a used Fortuner, a late FJ Cruiser or a Prado. Here is what the money buys today.

Fortuner, FJ, FJ Cruiser and Prado figures are typical asking prices on live listings, 19 October 2026. Jimny prices are Suzuki South Africa’s list prices, same day.

Buy the FJ if you want a new Land Cruiser for gravel, farm roads and weekends away. It suits short trips and light towing. Just negotiate off the advertised prices, not the list price.

Buy a used Fortuner 2.4 4x4 if you drive far or tow. You get a diesel and better range. A used 2025 or 2026 one asks about R599,900 (133 listings, about 50,000 km). That is about R50,000 less than a new FJ GX asks. Our Fortuner price guide has the full picture, and every one for sale is on our Fortuner page.

Buy a late FJ Cruiser if you want V6 power and a car that holds its money. You’ll pay for it in fuel and older tech.

Buy a Prado if you need real family space and diesel range. You’ll need about twice the budget. Our Prado 150 vs 250 guide explains the two shapes.

What about the Jimny? Forum regulars say it isn’t really a rival. It’s the car people step up from. The rival they do name is the GWM Tank 300.

One last cost before you sign. Land Cruisers are on the high-risk hijack lists. Some insurers now want a tracker, or two, on Toyota 4x4s. Get a quote on the exact version first, and ask in writing about tracker rules. Our Land Cruiser theft and hijacking guide covers the layers that help.
