A new 4x4 drawer system in South Africa costs from R6,500 (boxes extra) to about R38,000. The typical one on sale today is about R21,000, and a used Front Runner drawer goes for about R5,500 to R6,000.
Buy Front Runner if you want to spend less and don’t mind measuring. Have one built if you drive a 79 bakkie or want every gap filled. And if you’re not sure you need drawers at all, start with four Wolf Pack boxes for R1,941.
Every trip starts the same way. You unpack three boxes to find the tyre gauge at the bottom of the fourth. A drawer system fixes that. It also adds weight, and in a Cruiser that already carries a fridge, water and two people, the weight matters more than the price.
We earn a small commission if you buy through our Dometic links. It never changes the price you pay.
What a drawer system costs in South Africa
There are three ways to get drawers: buy them, have them built, or build them yourself. Here is what each costs today.
| Route | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Wolf Pack Pro boxes only | R1,941 for four | Four 30 litre boxes, no frame |
| Front Runner Wolf Pack Pro storage system | R6,680 to R6,800 | Steel frame, carpeted deck, four boxes, no slides |
| Front Runner universal drawer | R6,500 to R19,200 | Sliding drawers on a steel frame. Boxes extra on the cheaper ones |
| Made for your model (Big Country and others) | R14,999 to R31,999 | Bolts to the factory points |
| Aluminium kit (Ironman) | from about R32,000 | Made for your model, aluminium |
| Built to order (Custom Leisure Tech, Pretoria) | R21,750 to R27,795 | Double cab, key lock. Fitting R1,350 extra |
| Second hand Front Runner | about R5,500 to R6,000 | A few ads we found |
Prices checked on 23 October 2026.
Front Runner’s price doesn’t include fitting, and it doesn’t show a fitting price. Custom Leisure Tech does. Big Country drawers cost the same at Big Country and at Alpha Accessories, so shopping around won’t save you anything on those.

4x4 drawer systems on sale in South Africa right now
50 in stock at 5 South African stores today, from R6 500 to R38 157. Typical price about R20 999.
Buy, have one built, or build your own
Buy off the shelf
Front Runner is the cheapest new way in. A sliding drawer costs R6,500, against R14,999 for Big Country’s cheapest. You can order today and collect in Kyalami, Johannesburg, or have it delivered in 1 to 5 working days. Drawers don’t ship free.
Front Runner also publishes the weight of each drawer. That lets you do the payload sum before you buy. The drawers carry a 2-year warranty, and the boxes 1 year.
The catch is fit. Every Front Runner drawer on the South African site is universal. That means one size for many vehicles. There are no side panels to fill the gaps, you may need to drill, and you must measure first. Owners on the forums say a bought unit wastes packing space and sits high. They’re not wrong.
Have one built, or buy one made for your car
A drawer made for your exact vehicle fills the whole load bay. It bolts to the factory holes, and side panels fill the space over the wheel arches.
Local names selling drawers today:
- Big Country (Kempton Park): Savute range for wagons, Zambezi for bakkies.
- Custom Leisure Tech (Rosslyn, Pretoria): built to order, prices on the site.
- Bushtech (Johannesburg): aluminium, on quote.
- Ironman 4x4: aluminium kits.
- Gobi-X: sold through Go-4LO.
- DECKED: sold by Rhino 4x4, on quote.
- Kalahari Canopies: drawers with their canopy builds, on quote.
ARB sells drawers here too. We found no South African price.
The forum line you’ll hear is that a local builder does it for half of Front Runner’s price. Today’s prices don’t back that up. The cheapest made-for-your-car drawer above costs more than double Front Runner’s cheapest. Get a quote before you believe it.
The other downsides are a longer wait, weights that are mostly not published, and a drawer that only fits that one model when you sell the car.
Build your own
The South African home-build kit list hasn’t changed in years. Furnlock heavy-duty slides, Maizey’s Connect-It aluminium tube, marine ply, carpet, and a mate who can weld.
What builders learn the hard way:
- The slides are the heavy part. One local double drawer weighed about 120 kg. The slides alone were 30 kg.
- Carpet everything. Bare metal drawers bang over every speed bump.
- Keep dust out of the tracks. Hang the rollers so dust doesn’t sit in them.
- You’ll probably build two. Many builders replaced their first one once they knew what they needed.
We found no current cost for materials or labour that we trust. If you want a bought part to build around, a Front Runner fridge slide starts at R2,600.

Buying a drawer system second hand
Front Runner is the brand you’ll see used most, because a universal unit moves from one car to the next. We found a 6 Cub Box drawer with a sliding top at R5,500 (R10,800 new, boxes extra) and a double drawer at R6,000. That’s two ads, not a market price.
Plenty of owners hunt the classifieds for months before they buy new. Before you pay, check:
- The slides run smooth all the way out.
- The latch holds it shut.
- The keys come with it, if it locks.
- The brackets and fitting kit are there.
- If it was made for one vehicle, it’s the same model as yours.

79 single cab with a canopy
This is the classic South African set-up, and it’s where a local builder beats Front Runner. Big Country’s drawers for the single cab are 1,470 mm long, with an extra top that reaches the cab. Front Runner’s longest drawer is 1,252 mm, so it leaves a gap. Big Country rates each drawer for 150 kg.
79 double cab
The load bin is shorter. Big Country’s Zambezi Twin costs R24,999. Gobi-X is made to order for R23,995 and takes about 10 working days. Bushtech and DECKED list the 79 too, on quote.
76 station wagon
The 76 and the 300 can carry the least of any Cruiser here, so weigh your choices (see the payload table below). Big Country starts at R14,999, and its combo drawer takes a fridge up to 90 litres.
For the cab, Front Runner makes a Land Cruiser 76 Under Console Safe for R2,000. It’s 2 mm steel, bolts under the factory console, and suits right-hand drive only.
Prado and 300
Big Country makes drawers for the 300, 200, Prado 150 and Prado 250. Its Prado 150 floor-mount drawer means taking out the third-row jump seats. Ask your fitter exactly what comes out before you book.
Wagon owners share the same regrets. A fridge on top of drawers sits high and blocks the rear view. And the jack can end up trapped under the drawers. Check where yours lives before the drawers go in.
Hilux and Fortuner
Big Country makes a Fortuner twin drawer for R20,999 and Hilux drawers from R24,999. Bushtech lists both, and DECKED lists the Hilux. Front Runner’s universal drawers and Wolf Pack systems fit a Fortuner boot if you measure first.

Wolf Pack Pro boxes: the cheap start
Plenty of owners never buy drawers. They run boxes on a flat floor and carry them to the camp table. If you’re not sure, or you don’t want to drill your boot, start here.
| Product | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wolf Pack Pro, one box | R525 | 30 litres, 3.65 kg |
| Wolf Pack Pro Quad Set | R1,941 | Four boxes, R159 less than four singles |
| 4 Wolf Pack Pro Storage System Kit / Asymmetric | R6,800 | Frame, deck and four boxes, 50.6 kg |
| 4 Wolf Pack Pro Storage System Kit / Narrow | R6,680 | Frame, deck and four boxes |
| 4 Wolf Pack Pro Storage System / Asymmetric | R3,840 | Frame and deck only, 36 kg |
The R3,840 frame was on sale on 23 October (normally R6,400). The storage systems hook onto your car’s own tie-down points with hooks and turnbuckles. No drilling, and they come out in minutes.
One trap: Wolf Packs can be a touch too wide for some older drawers. Measure your drawer before you buy boxes for it.

Front Runner drawers
| Drawer | Price | Weight | Boxes and lock |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 Cub Box Drawer / Wide | R6,500 | 36.8 kg | No boxes, latch only |
| 6 Cub Box Drawer with Cargo Sliding Top | R10,800 | 68 kg | No boxes, latch only |
| 6 Cub Pack Drawer / Wide, incl. boxes | R15,600 | 64.3 kg | Six boxes, lock and keys |
| 4 Cub Box Drawer and Fridge Slide Combo | R17,200 | 96.2 kg | No boxes, latch only |
| 6 Wolf Pack Pro Drawer / Wide, incl. boxes | R19,200 | 67 kg | Six boxes, lock and keys |
Each drawer is rated for 113 kg. The cheaper ones come empty, and a Cub Pack box costs R429.
Our pick is the 6 Cub Pack Drawer with boxes at R15,600. The R10,800 drawer needs six boxes on top (R2,574) and still has no lock. The Combo makes sense if you want drawers and a fridge slide in one unit. It costs about R14,000 less than Big Country’s combos, but it weighs 96 kg empty.

Fridge slides that go with drawers
A fridge slide pulls the fridge out past the tailgate, so you’re not climbing in for a cold drink.
| Slide | Price | Weight | Holds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front Runner Fridge Slide, 40 to 52 litres | R2,600 | 13 kg | 100 kg |
| Dometic Fridge Slide, 55 litres | R4,700 | 19.9 kg | 90 kg |
| Front Runner Fridge Slide, 80 to 90 litres | R4,200 | 16.7 kg | 100 kg |
In a wagon, a slide on top of drawers puts the fridge high. Slide it out at home and check the lid opens under the tailgate. Still choosing a fridge? Read our camping fridge guide or compare fridge prices.

Weight, payload and GVM in plain words
This is the part most drawer adverts skip.
Payload is how much your Cruiser may legally carry, people included. GVM (gross vehicle mass) is the most it may weigh fully loaded. Payload is the GVM minus the weight of the empty car.
| Model (2.8 diesel) | Payload |
|---|---|
| 79 single cab | 775 to 1,175 kg |
| 79 double cab | 810 to 1,050 kg |
| 76 station wagon | 575 to 795 kg |
| 300 diesel | 575 to 755 kg |
From Toyota South Africa’s specs.
Now add up a simple 76 set-up, using the weights Front Runner and Dometic publish.
| Item | Weight |
|---|---|
| Front Runner drawer and fridge slide combo | 96.2 kg |
| Four Cub Packs, empty | about 8 kg |
| Dometic CFX5 55 fridge, empty | 20.2 kg |
| 40 litres of water | 40 kg |
| Total, before food, people or recovery gear | about 164 kg |
That’s over a quarter of a 76’s payload at the low end. Two adults take another big bite.
Three rules worth keeping:
- 113 kg per drawer is what the slide can hold. It’s not what your car may carry.
- Drawers, water and the fridge all sit behind the back axle. If you can, weigh each axle at a weighbridge.
- Bolt or strap the drawers down. In a rollover, a loose drawer becomes a rocket.
Our GVM upgrade guide explains how to carry more legally. A second battery adds weight too: see our dual battery guide.
Theft and locking
A locked drawer keeps an opportunist out of your canopy or boot. It won’t stop someone who takes the whole car.
Drawers that lock: Big Country, Custom Leisure Tech, Gobi-X, and Front Runner’s two drawers that come with boxes. The cheaper Front Runner drawers only latch.
Owners here worry less about the campsite than the lodge car park, the home yard and the fuel stop. One owner’s insurer paid out for his stolen trailer but not the camping gear inside, because he hadn’t listed it. List your drawers and what’s in them on your policy.
For the car itself, read our theft and hijacking guide.
Our pick
- Not sure you need drawers: four Wolf Pack Pro boxes for R1,941, or the R6,800 storage system.
- Wagon (76, Prado, 300, Fortuner) on a budget: the Front Runner 6 Cub Pack Drawer with boxes for R15,600. Measure first.
- 79 single cab with a canopy: a drawer made for the 79, like Big Country’s 1,470 mm Zambezi at R27,298. Front Runner isn’t the pick here.
- Already have drawers: add a fridge slide from R2,600.
