The 80 sits on 16-inch rims, and the jump from 275/70R16 to 285/75R16 adds both width and sidewall height — more ground clearance and a more aggressive stance without changing the wheel.
Why the 80 Takes Bigger Tyres So Well
Unlike the later IFS Cruisers, the 80 Series rides on coil-sprung solid axles front and rear, with full-time four-wheel drive and noticeably roomier wheel arches. That’s exactly the recipe for fitting larger tyres: there’s more clearance to play with and fewer steering-geometry compromises at full lock.
Most owners run 285/75R16 (33s) with nothing more than a mild lift. Going beyond 33s — into 35-inch territory — is possible but starts demanding regearing, more serious suspension work and arch trimming, and it takes the edge off the 80’s famously easy on-road manners. For the overlander who wants clearance without drama, 33s on an 80 are about as sweet a setup as the Land Cruiser range offers.
